Instructions

Buy a foundation brush, even if it is the only one you plan to purchase. A foundation brush is a large brush with long bristles and a flat top instead of a handle. Dab the foundation brush in foundation powder and move it in circular motions around your face to blend the foundation. Follow the same procedure to apply bronzer or blush to your cheeks.

Add concealer to especially red or broken-out areas of your face. These brushes will be medium sized and may be made out of sponge instead of bristles. This allows the brush to soak up the concealer and apply it to your face. Rub it in the concealer and apply it in a circular motion over a small area. Blend it into your foundation with your fingers, using another clean makeup sponge.

Apply eye shadow with a medium-sized brush, like you used with your concealer.. Some eye shadow kits come with this brush. If not, look for one with short, soft bristles and a handle. It doesn't have to be very big. A large brush will pick up too much eye shadow. Dab one side of the brush in eye shadow and dab it onto a paper towel to remove any excess. Then brush gently from one corner of your eye to the other. Fill in the rest of your eyelid in the same manner.

Apply eyeliner after eye shadow with a thin brush. It should have long bristles, but they should be very thin and close together, such as those found in small paintbrushes used for adding details to paintings. Apply eyeliner to the brush and drag the tip of the brush across your eyelid, above your eyelashes.

Buy brushes that are made of animal hair if you want to get the best quality. Badger hair is often used for bigger brushes. Sable is used in smaller brushes, such as an eyeliner brush. More expensive brushes contain goat or squirrel hair but are more costly. Cheaper versions will do just fine for everyday use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy a makeup bag to take your brushes with you. Always wipe brushes on a paper towel after each use.
