Clean a Narrow Neck Hummingbird Feeder

It is very important to keep a hummingbird feeder clean to prevent the nectar (or sugar water) from spoiling in the summer heat. Spoiled nectar can grow bacteria and mold and will repel hummingbirds.
However, not all hummingbird feeders are easy to clean. Many popular (and inexpensive) feeders have a very narrow neck. These feeders are impossible to clean with a standard bottle brush.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the hummingbird feeder apart - this varies depending on the style of feeder you have. You'll need to unstopper or unscrew the nectar reservoir and empty the feeder in the sink. Rinse the feeder parts in hot water. Do not use soap.

    • 2

Fill the reservoir part way with hot water, a splash of vinegar and a handful of uncooked rice. Close the narrow opening with your thumb or palm and swirl the water around. The rice will scrub the inside of the hummingbird feeder, and the vinegar will kill the germs.

    • 3

Rinse the hummingbird feeder - repeat at least three times to fully remove the vinegar.

    • 4

Clean the feeder ports with the toothbrush. Difficult crevices - like the threads on the hummingbird feeder - can be cleaned with a toothpick.

    • 5

Refill with fresh nectar for your hummingbirds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most hummingbird feeders can be run through the dishwasher. Do this at night to avoid interrupting your bird's feeding habits.
