Drink up!

Drinking games were popularized by fraternities but have been present in society since the time of the ancient Greeks. Pyramid is a card-style drinking game that can be played with up to ten players. You should not play drinking games if you are a recovering alcoholic or have a drinking problem. Pyramid may also be played as a standard card game, if desired.

Instructions

    • 1

Place six cards face down in a row on a flat surface. Beneath this first row, place a row of five cards in the same fashion. Continue making rows, each with one less card than the one before until there is one card on the bottom. The cards should resemble an inverted pyramid.

    • 2

Deal the remaining cards, face down, to each player until the cards are gone. Instruct players to look at their own cards but not to show them to the other players.

    • 3

Turn over the bottom card of the pyramid. If you have a card in your hand with a number corresponding to the card turned over, you may instruct any player who does not have a corresponding card to drink. The trick is that even if you do not have a corresponding card, you can order someone to drink. The player instructed to drink may either drink or challenge you. If you do not actually have the card you said you did, you must drink. If you do have the card, you must show the card and the player originally instructed to drink must drink double.

    • 4

Turn over the next card in the row, or if the row is over, the card at the far left of the next row. The number of cards in the row you are playing in corresponds to the number of drinks players take. If a card in the third row from the bottom has been turned over, the player instructed to drink will drink three drinks, or---if incorrectly challenging another player---six drinks.

Keep in mind which cards each players have shown as the game continues. A good memory is the most valuable skill to have to win Pyramid.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pyramid can be played as a standard card game without the use of alcohol.

  • It is illegal to play Pyramid if you are under 21. Exercise caution and responsibility when playing this or any other drinking game.
