The standard wood waterbed frame is quite simple to build. It is a box on top of a box. This project will create a large piece of furniture that might dominate the room.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Determine the size that you want to build. Your measurements will depend on your mattress size:
    * King: 72 by 84 inches
    * Queen: 60 by 84 inches
    * Super single: 48 by 84 inches

  2. Step 2

    Cut two side pieces from 1-by-6 or 1-by-8 boards that are about 2 inches longer than your mattress. This will be about 86 inches.

  3. Step 3

    Cut your two end pieces out of the same kind of lumber as the side pieces. Add at least 1/8 inch to both sides.

  4. Step 4

    Attach your frame together with wood L-brackets and screws.

  5. Step 5

    Cut four more pieces of wood for the base. You will need two long and two short. The measurements will depend on the size of your large frame. This smaller base will be about two-thirds smaller than the large one. It can also be shorter. A good choice of lumber size for this frame is 2-by-4 or 2-by-6.

  6. Step 6

    Attach the small frame pieces together with screws and L-brackets, and center the smaller frame inside the large one.

  7. Step 7

    Cut sheets of plywood to match the outside dimensions of your large frame.

  8. Step 8

    Lay the plywood on the smaller frame and center it. This is important because the weight must be evenly distributed.

  9. Step 9

    Attach the plywood to the smaller base with recessed screws.

  10. Step 10

    Secure the large frame to the plywood with wood L-brackets and screws.

  11. Step 11

    Install your liner, heater and mattress.

  12. Step 12

    Fill up the mattress, and you are done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stain any wood pieces before assembly. Sand any sharp edges to prevent damaging the liner and you. For a cleaner look, you could miter your corners.
  • If this project becomes too much for one person, ask for help.

Are you a direct competitor (of an author or another Posting user, or otherwise have an interest adverse to the author or another posting user, you will fully disclose the interest;)??? I followed your lead and ended up with a SALES pitch. I wanted to MAKE my own bed.

on 5/24/2009 Folks,I'm sorry but please go elsewhere to find some good waterbed plans. Based upon over 30 years experience with waterbeds only the dimensions in Step 1 are correct. Basically all the rest of the information is incorrect or incomplete and your bed will fall apart. If you need help try going here: http://www.awesomewaterbeds.com/Wood_Frame_Waterbed_FAQs.cfm and don't be afraid to ask for help.WaterbedGuru
