A virus can be detrimental to your computer's health. They can slow down, cause operating system problems, reboots, software and hardware failure, and can cost you hundreds of dollars. These are a few simple steps you can take to removing and protecting yourself from viruses.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download an anti-virus protection program. There are several of these programs out there. One popular anti virus program that I like is AVG Anti Virus Free Edition. Obviously, it is free, but it does a great job of keeping your computer protected.

  2. Step 2

Turn your anti-virus program on auto update to ensure that you have the latest version and definitions. In addition, you should schedule a daily scan to make sure that you don't have any viruses. Not only should you keep your anti-virus program updated, but you need to keep your operating system up to date with the latest service packs and security patches.

  3. Step 3

If you happen to get a virus, your anti-virus program should be able to identify it, but it cannot always remove it. Make sure if your anti virus program identifies a threat that you type the name of the malicious software into google to see if there are any additional steps that you need to take.
