Incentive charts are an effective tool in improving your child's behavior or getting him to complete his chores. You can learn how to effectively use incentive charts with your children in a few easy steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set realistic goals for incentive charts. Goals should be specific and address something that can be measured. For example, saying "please" and "thank you" would make a good goal for incentive charts. If you set a general goal like "behave well", it's left open to interpretation. And a 3 year old's interpretation of "behave well" is a lot different than his parent's interpretation!

  2. Step 2

Pick rewards. Make sure the rewards are motivating to your kids. It doesn't have to be a toy or other object. It could be a special trip to the zoo or the ice cream shop. If your kids are old enough, you can involve them in this process.

  3. Step 3

Write the goal or goals on your incentive charts. For younger children, pictures are a good way to illustrate the goals. This is their visual reminder of their goal. You may also want to include a picture of the reward as a motivator.

  4. Step 4

Discuss the purpose of incentive charts to your children. Explain that you will be keeping track of times when they achieve their goal. Make sure to focus on the positive aspects of it so they're motivated to reach the goals on their incentive charts. Explain exactly how they can earn their reward.

  5. Step 5

Post your incentive charts in a prominent location where the children will see them often. Most families spend a lot of time in the kitchen so it would be a good location for incentive charts. Seeing their incentive charts may be an added motivator for your children.

  6. Step 6

Remind them frequently about their incentive charts. If your child forgets to say "please", remind him of the incentive charts. We all need reminders now and then!

  7. Step 7

Use incentive charts consistently. Being consistent when it comes to behavior in children is very important. Follow through with using incentive charts or they may become ineffective.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't feel bad about adjusting the way you use incentive charts. While these suggestions are meant to help, every family is different and you may find techniques that work better for you.

on 4/2/2009 I started making these monthly for my children in 1980. Since my youngest daughter couldn't read yet I drew hers in pictures -- she loved it. It works very well if you are consistent and follow through with whatever parameters and rewards you set. Thanks for the nice article. 5*s
