Make Onion Soup Mix
Make Onion Soup Mix

This is a thrifty version of the onion soup mix that is used in many recipes. Making your own mixes can save some money. Buy some inexpensive spices at the dollar store. Usually around 50 cents each. This is a good way to cut down on salt used in a recipe. Just add more herbs and spices in place of the salt.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/4 Cup instant minced onion
  • 4 Teaspoons onion powder
  • 1/3 Cup beef bouillon powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon celery seed (crushed)
  • 1/4 Teaspoon sugar
  1. Step 1

Mix all ingredients, and store in an airtight container. Make double the amount of onion soup mix or even more and put in ziplock bags. This saves a lot of time later on when you are cooking.

  2. Step 2

To use,add 2 tablespoons of the onion soup mix to 1 cup of boiling water. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

  3. Step 3

This makes a stronger onion soup mix than the store bought mix, so you can use less.

  4. Step 4

It only takes a few minutes to make your own mixes and it really saves money in the long run. You can add other spices that you like to the recipe and make it your own special recipe.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy spices at dollar stores.
  • Keep spices in air tight containers in a cool dry place.
