Finding a reliable, but cheap car rental is a necessity when going on vacation! Why spend thousands of dollars on a car rental from the airport when you could plan ahead to rent a car from the dealer down the street for much less? Below you will find several tips and tricks for finding the cheapest car rental for your next vacation...

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shop around! Search the internet for the cheapest car rental available in the area you are visiting! There are many websites that offer discounts on car rentals. Be sure to use a reputable dealer! Some deals may seem great, but always be sure to read the fine details before you purchase a rental car.

  2. Step 2

Check with your car insurance company. Many offer discounts on car rentals and even vacation packages. Some companies offer percentages off, while others will give free upgrades to a larger rental car. Maximize your savings by using a coupon code from your car insurance company along with a discount from step 1 to get the cheapest car rental.

  3. Step 3

Stay away from the airport! In order to get the cheapest car rental, you must rent from an offsite dealer. Airport car rental dealers have the ability to jack up prices, because they expect you to want a car available when you get off the plane. Call a taxi to bring you down the road a few miles instead. It will literally save hundreds of dollars!

on 7/28/2009 really good advice as I always rent from the airport, but you may want to go thru Priceline.com as well....during a recent trip form Texas To California, where I was there for a month, I only payed 342.00 plus taxes as opposed to the 1200.00+ i was finding everywhere else. downside to Priceline, you are charged as soon as you reserve it, and its hard to make changes as well. so really great article
