Things You'll Need:
- A parakeet or two who need a cage
-
Step 1
What size cage should you buy? Before you decide what size to buy, answer these questions -
Do you have one bird or two? If you have two, the minimum size recommended is 39"x20"x32".
Will your parakeet be able to exercise somewhere other than his cage? If you will not be letting your parakeet out, you should try to get the biggest cage that you have room for. The size of the cage should be not any smaller than 18"x18"x24".
When choosing your cage, make sure the wire spacing is no more than 1/2 wide. Parakeets might be tempted to stick their heads out, if the gap is any wider. -
Step 2
Look for a rectangular shaped cage. While cages come in many different shapes, the parakeets prefer rectangle ones best.
-
Step 3
.
Buy a cage that will adjust to how you will be raising your parakeet. If you have plans for letting your bird out a lot, try to find a cage that has a removable top. Taking off the top of the cage is much easier than dealing with a door. If you will not be taking your parakeet out much, consider door size . Make sure the door is large enough for your hand to go in and out easily. -
Step 4
Look for a wire grate on the bottom of the cage. This separates the bird from the droppings and stops parakeets from picking through the litter.
-
Step 5
Now that you have your perfect parakeet cage, consider adding horizontal bars. Parakeets love to climb around. A cage that you can add horizontal bars too, as well as vertical bars, is a parakeet heaven.
