Step 1
Ask yourself why you love America.
Seriously, what is it about this country that makes you enjoy living here? My guess is that you answered freedom. Where else in the world can someone write an article expressing their unhappiness with the current president? In a lot of countries, you could lose your head for something like that. But here in the Home of the Free, you can say and write whatever you want.
Keeping that in mind, you should take into consideration that President Obama was America's choice. The people voted and they got their wish. If you didn't vote for Barack Obama, then you are going to have just suck it up, plain and simple. You can still support America for being a fantastic place to live! -
Step 2
Examine your motives.
Let's just be honest. A lot of people in America voted for Barack Obama because he is African-American. But on the other hand, a lot of people did not vote for him because he is African-American. Both of these groups are in the wrong. We should never choose a president (or any position) based on the color of a candidate's skin. It's downright dangerous.
So make sure your motives are clear in why you dislike Barack Obama. If you're just being a racist, then you are so far from Patriotic that this article can't help you.
But if you don't support Obama because of his political views or his moral stance, then you may have a valid point. Now is a good time to explore why you believe what you believe. Ask people who support Obama why they believe the way they do. Engaging in these civil discussions are always a good way to grow and change as people. You don't have to compromise to have a conversation. -
Step 3
Get out there and do something.
So you can't change who the president is. You are stuck with President Obama for at least four years. But you can start making an impact on your country during this time. Change begins right where you are at. If you don't like the way our country is, then do something about it! Stop complaining and get involved.
If you have strong convictions about abortion being horribly wrong, then get busy. Don't start a picket line in front of family planning clinics. Then you'll just waste your time and add more heartache to already hurting women. Why don't you volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center? Become a foster parent. Adopt a child. Mentor a pregnant teenager. Basically, just quit talking and start doing something. -
Step 4
Be respectful.
As Americans, we can be patriotic by being civil with one another. We can agree to disagree. You might think that Barack Obama is completely crazy. You might think this is the worst mistake America has ever made. That's fine. You are entitled to your opinion, but opinions are kind of like big toes... everybody has them.
Being patriotic means taking pride in your country, and living peaceably with other Americans. So be respectful as you discuss your opinions with others. There is no need for name calling and cursing. We can celebrate our freedom and our love of this great nation by showing respect to one another.

on 2/24/2009 Amen. Above all else understand that he is a politician--NOT a messiah. He was clearly the best choice we had and we fervently hope he is a good guy BUT he does not walk on water and I, for one, am completely creeped out by the plethora of obviously staged photos of him showing halos and rays of light surrounding his head. Do not allow yourself to be so easily mesmerized by the media.
