Step 1
Alaska fishing vacation charterWhen planning an Alaska fishing vacation, it is important first to decide how much of your vacation to Alaska will be devoted to fishing. Some visitors to Alaska choose to take a day or two fishing by signing up for a small Alaska fishing charter. Fishing with a charter guide is helpful for those with less time and less experience. This is also an excellent option if you do not want to bring your own gear.

Step 2
Fish for sockeye salmon on your Alaska fishing vacationIf you want your Alaska vacation to be exclusively an Alaska fishing vacation and nothing else, then there are several excellent options available to you. When choosing to plan an exclusive Alaska fishing vacation, it is best to investigate options that include packages with or without guides and gear that take you (usually by plane) to a remote location where you can literally fish for days on end in solitude, staying at a lodge provided. There are many lodges available. Read reviews of past customers to get an idea of quality of service, accommodations, and fishing success. Also consider checking with the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service for fishing options they offer. Several backcountry cabins are set apart and managed by the government for visitors to rent and use for fishing.

Step 3
Deep sea fish on your Alaska fishing vacationIf you desire to completely plan your own Alaska fishing vacation where you do everything by yourself (i.e. no package or fishing lodge), then it is possible, but you’ll have your work cut out for you. Knowing someone who lives in Alaska who has knowledge, a boat or gear would be ideal.

Step 4
Be sure to check regulations for your Alaska fishing vacationFinally, don’t forget to consider the regulations involved with an Alaska fishing vacation. You will need an out of state fishing license, and possibly some special tags or stickers depending on what you plan to fish for. You should also check into legal and illegal baits and methods of fishing (i.e. snag vs. hook in the mouth, catch and release, netting, etc.)
