Making Sun Tea became popular during the 1980's. It's a concept that fits today's Green Lifestyle because you don't use any electric or gas energy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A large clear glass pitcher or jug with lid
  • Tea bags, any flavor/type
  • A sunny day
  1. Step 1

Fill the glass pitcher or glass jug with clean water.
How many tea bags to use? How much water to use? This is taste-dependent. Some people prefer a stronger tea (use more tea bags and keep in sun longer) or a weaker tea (use less tea bags and remove from the sun "bath" sooner). Basically, use 3 - 4 tea bags to 1 quart water.

  2. Step 2

Place the tea bags in the jug. They will float, so gently dunk them into the water until they're saturated with water. This step takes about 60 seconds.

  3. Step 3

Place lid on jug/pitcher. Place the jug outside in direct sunlight. In 1 - 2 hours you'll have energy-efficient Sun Tea! Remove the tea bags before placing the jug in the refrigerator. Since the water isn't usually as hot as when making iced tea with boiling water, it can be placed in the refrigerator as soon as it reaches the color of tea you prefer. Enjoy!!!

Tips & Warnings
  • A quick, no mess way to make iced tea!
  • Kids find this a fun way to make iced tea! Make certain an adult supervises.
  • You must use a glass vessel because the heat from the sun penetrates it better than plastic.
  • Be careful handling the glass jug while outside. Carry it firmly to prevent injury should it drop and shatter.
  • The longer you leave it outside, the stronger the tea. If you like a weaker tea, check on it after 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the intensity of the sun.
