Grief is a hard process for everyone to go through... Especially for a child. Sometimes it's hard to comprehend the loss of a loved one , but there must always be a sense of hope.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Time
  • Ability to expect the unexpected
  1. Step 1

Let him/her ask as many questions as needed in order to to resolve the event in her mind. Children have a curious nature, and if we, as adults, stop them from asking, we put a block on the process as well.

  2. Step 2

Answer their questions as honestly as possible. Children are aware of the events surrounding them, and when something is being avoided. Honesty is always the best policy.

  3. Step 3

Cry with them and share their pain. My nephew is still dealing with the loss of his gradmother, but- with a little venting- he usually does a lot better. Don't be afraid to share your own experiences with a child. Let them know that you understand what they are going through. Often, this will help soothe the child's fears or doubts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember: A child reactions are often more intense than an adult's. Be prepared for changes in mood and behavior, nightmares, and sudden outbursts.
  • Hugs are always needed. Take the time for reminders of affection.
  • Always cherish the good times and the memories. Often a picture or a story can help a child cope a little better.
  • If the child's mood or behavior becomes extreme (sadness, excessive talk of death or dying, and/or violent outbursts of anger), it may be necess ary to seek the help of a professional grief counselor.
