Start by looking for pet gates at your local thrifty store. While their inventory is far more random than Petsmart, the cost will be 1/4 the price as well.

Watch the pet stores to see what pet safety gates are available for discount. Gates are very popular and stores have continously new styles coming and going.

Know what you are looking for. The pet gates can be more expensive if you want wood, but metal and plastic are much cheaper and still as effective.

Consider an alternate to actual pet gates. While you need to create a blockage in the area the animal will not be permitted in, it doesn't have to be a fancy pet gate. You could also use a large piece of cardboard (from a refridgerator box) a piece of plastic or even a used baby gate.
