Switch to Whole Wheat

Everyone knows that eating Whole Wheat breads provides better nutrition for you and your family. However, it is not usually as easy as it seems. Sometimes if you dive in to complete Wheat when your family is used to white breads, they will complain and rebel.

With a few easy steps you can gradually introduce whole wheat breads to your family and get them started on a path to healthier eating habits.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Honey Wheat bread loaf
  • various whole wheat items
  • whole wheat flour (optional)
  1. Step 1

You want to buy a very light wheat bread to get your family used to the taste. Typically 100% whole wheat bread is heavier and stronger in flavor than people who eat white bread are used to. Grocery stores now carry a type of mix bread. They are called blended wheats in which part white and part wheat is mixed to make a lighter bread.
One example is usually a Honey Wheat bread loaf. It has a lighter color, texture and flavor than regular wheat bread.

  2. Step 2

Once your family has gotten used to the wheat blend, then it is time to gradually introduce other products. There are now more options than ever at grocery stores. A few good suggestions are whole wheat spaghetti and pasta, whole wheat rolls, and items made with wheat such as frozen pizzas (if you already buy frozen pizzas. If not I wouldn't suggest starting now.)

  3. Step 3

After getting into more whole wheats, it is now time to start switching to a 100% whole wheat bread. Ideally it will have been around 2 weeks since you began this endeavor to give your family time to adjust to the new flavors. You may need to try a few different loafs or brands before you find a flavor of whole wheat bread that you prefer.

Tips & Warnings
  • After your family gets accustom to the taste of whole wheat breads you could try to start making your own. You can adjust recipes as you prefer it and make all types of things from scratch such as pizza doughs, rolls, biscuits, and muffins.
