Sew catnip bags to share with kitty, give as gifts or donate to animal shelters! Plus, you save money. Why spend $2.00 or more on a store bought catnip bag when you can make them for almost pennies a bag!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut fabric into 5" squares. Each catnip bag requires 2 squares of fabric. Place right sides of fabric together and sew 1/4" from the edge of the fabric. If your fabric frays easily, it's best to sew again over your first stitching to reinforce the bag.
Sew only three of the sides, leaving one end open.

  2. Step 2

Turn the bag right-side out. Your bag will have 3 sides sewn together and one end open to form a little pouch or bag.

Use the spoon to scoop catnip into the bag. Stuff the bag with catnip until it's almost full. Leave about 3/8" - 1/2" room to sew the bag closed.

  3. Step 3

With the bag filled with catnip press the open edges of the bag closed. While holding the edges closed (treat both pieces of fabric like it's one piece) fold the raw edges once down toward the bag, then fold under again so no raw edges show.

Pin the turned edge in place. Sew the edge closed with a sewing machine or by hand with needle and thread. Remove pins and clip threads.

Your cat will you love you for this!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use cotton fabrics since cats like to chew on the fabric.
  • Use bright, fun, pretty fabrics. Use your quilting scraps!
  • It's worth it to purchase a good quality catnip sold in plastic containers.
  • It's easy to make the catnip bags a different size and shape. Use your imagination!
  • Don't use fabrics that can shed such as faux fur or long loops. Your cat could choke.
  • Don't use vinyl fabrics (or similar) which might contain poisonous chemicals.
