This is one time of year that you either love or hate. Yes, it is tax time once again, but thanks to eFile, filing your taxes has never been so easy. If you make 56,000 a year and below, you are entitled to use eFile your taxes for free. Those who use eFile and direct deposit receive their tax rebates in about 10 days. This article will show you how to use the IRS website to choose a company and eFile your Federal taxes absolutely free.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet Access
  • W2 Form
  • Any other personal documents you will need to file your taxes
  1. Step 1

    Go to the official website for the IRS. The web address is: http://www.irs.gov

  2. Step 2

    Click on the e File/free e File link. It is located in the center of the page just below the slide show.

    Click on the free e File home link at the top of the page.

    Choose Tax Return Preperation Company

    You will have two choices on this page. You can click on the Choose my own Company Link or Help me choose a Company Link.

    I always choose the same company, so I make my own choice. Once you click this link, you will be given all available choices in alphabetical order.

    After you select your company, you will see a disclaimer link that lets you know that you will be leaving the IRS website. Click on this link.

  7. Step 7

    You should arrive at your chosen destination after you click on the disclaimer link. Once you reach the homepage of the company you chose, you should follow all instructions provided by the company. The first step is usually setting up a login and password for the site. After completing all required fields, the system will check for errors and then efile your taxes. If a problem is found, you will receive an email asking you to login and correct any errors. Once you fix your errors, you taxes will be resubmitted to the IRS. You will receive an email confirming that you filed your taxes using the eFile option. You will receive another email when the IRS accepts your return. If all goes well, you should receive your refund in about 10 days.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have all information and documents handy
  • You will be asked if you want to efile your state taxes using the federal tax information. If you choose this option, there is usually a reasonable fee attached. You can choose to file your state taxes by mail if you wish.
  • DO not try to access one of the sites without going through the IRS.GOV website. If you do, you will be asked to pay full price for service.
