The fun of bringing home a new pet is the challenge of naming him or her. I will provide you with some tips in selecting a suitable name.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing I do when I have a new dog or cat is to observe the pet for a while to see what qualities they exhibit. Are they cheery? Hyper? Lazy? Some names are given based on personality. Spunky, Sparky, Killer, Mousey, Princess, Angel, etc.

  2. Step 2

The next thing I do is to really LOOK at your dog or cat. Their physical features could inspire their name. For example, Butch, Fat Kitty, Kinki, Shortie, Socks, Kalli (for Calico), Tiny, Baby, Spot, Tiger, etc.

  3. Step 3

Sometimes my husband and I use our favorite things to name our pets. We named Frappachina for a Starbuck’s drink, and Chimi & Changa for the Mexican dish chimichanga.

  4. Step 4

Other people really like to name their dogs and cats after people names, and I’ve done that as well. Good examples are Maxwell, Gidget, Lily, Ciara, Zahara, Betty, Fred, Oscar, Henri, George, and so on.

  5. Step 5

There are several websites that you can peruse to choose a name for your pet. I’ve included them in the links below. These resources will tell you the meaning of the name you are considering as well as the popularity.

  6. Step 6

Good luck on selecting a name for your pet. If you end up with one you don’t like or doesn’t fit, you can always use a nickname for your furbaby. Our Angel Baby is affectionately known as chunky butt and she will answer to both.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider several names until you consistently use one and then you know it fits.
  • Practice yelling the name of your pet and making sure it's easy to say as you may need to call for your pet.

on 1/31/2009 I named my all-time favorite cat "Isis" because she thought she was a goddess.

on 1/30/2009 No matter what we name our pets, they end up getting all kinds of crazy nick-names. My little girl cat Murfee has been called Murf, Fee, FiFi, Fifito: the list goes on! And since she's "a bit on the chunky side", the kids took to calling her BEEF. She answers to all of them, too =D THANKS!
