Step 1
Remove the laces before washing unless you like impossible tangles. You can wash the laces by hand or replace them. Put the shoes into a lingerie bag or a pillow case - use safety pins across the open end to keep the shoes inside. Run through the wash with some similar colored towels. My walking shoes are white so I wash them with white towels and add a little bleach. The towels keep the washer balanced.

Step 2
Let dry until they aren't soggy any more and stuff loosely with crumpled newspaper to keep their shape. If there is a lot of humidity you might want to change the newspaper a couple times during the drying process. When they are almost completely dry, you can take the paper out so that they get lots of air circulation.

Step 3
Spot clean your athletic or tennis shoes with carpet cleaner. Spray it on the spot and scrub in with an old toothbrush. Let dry. Brush the carpet cleaner reside off.

Step 4
If grease has soaked in sprinkle some baking soda or cornstarch right on the grease spot on dry shoes - before you wash them. Let dry and then brush off.
