Things You'll Need:
- Time and Patience
- Puppy Pads

Step 1
How To Potty Train Puppies
You should start at 3 mo. Old or sooner If you can. Take your puppy outdoors every 2 or 3 hours as his or her bladder is small and they need to go often. When they do go, praise them for it such as good boy or girl and pet them so as to make this an enjoyable event. This will help to encourage him or her to potty outside. As time goes by you can increase the amount of time between outings as his or her bladder will enlarge. I don't recommend giving them a treat when they go as they will start to expect this and it also could interfere with their diet. -
Step 2
Put down a potty pad in a designated spot inside of your living quarters and when your puppy goes potty place the absorbent side of the pad to the spot just enough to transfer the odor to the pad. Now put the pad back in it's designated spot and put your puppy on it while petting and praising him or her and allowing time for him or her to smell the pad. This will encourage him or her to use it. After this be sure to thoroughly clean the spot where your puppy went potty to eliminate any odor as to not attract him or her there again.
-
Step 3
If you stick to this routine eventually your puppy will want to go outside to potty and will let you know in some way so pay attention to your pet. Your pad will eventually become a back up for times that your not available as your pet will prefer to go potty outside.

on 9/19/2009 I trained my Chihuahua by taking her outside constantly. But one day with a pee pee pad at the door - she peed on it. So I took out the soiled pad and put it in the back of the yard where I wanted her to go. She got the clue by me standing there and kept saying "go pee pee for mommy" until she went. Then she got a big praise and pet for it! She loved that excitement when she went outside. Shortly after that she understood where to go and kept going in the same spot for 4 years. AI'm about to adopt a new male Chihuahua and I'm already anxious about how to train a boy dog this time! I'm doing something different this time. I'm getting a crate so I can keep him there when I'm not around and my 5 year old Chihuahua, Bella, will still be able to have run of the house.
