Instructions

    • 1

Begin by determining how many people will be attending your gathering. Large gatherings require a bit more planning and foresight (e.g. where will I put there coats, do I have enough seating, dishes, glasses, utensils, parking etc).

    • 2

Determine what type of event it will be. Sit down dinners are easiest with small groups. For a gathering of ten or more, consider a buffet.

    • 3

Plan your menu. Many items can be made several days in advance or frozen up to six months in advance (e.g. lasagna, ziti, eggplant parm, quiche all freeze perfectly). This allows the main course dish like a roast or turkey to be prepared very simply that day.

    • 4

Make your grocery list. Buy all frozen or non-perishable items well in advance. Include your beverages and paper products as well.

    • 5

A week in advance begin gathering and cleaning your china, platters, chaffing dishes, serving pieces, glasses, linens and anything else you may be using that day.

    • 6

Once cleaned, use post it notes to label what menu item will be placed on each platter or chaffing dish. Also pair the appropriate serving utensil with the platter.

    • 7

If having a buffet, determine where you'll be setting up your food. Place each label platter or chaffing dish in your desired location. If having a sit down dinner, set your table the day before to save time.

    • 8

Create a schedule for the day of your gathering. Determine what time and at what temperature your menu items will need to be heated. Also allow time get yourself ready and for some last minute cleanup.
