How to Make A Teacher's Pencil

This giant pencil is a creative way for a teacher to welcome students to the classroom.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1" x 6"x3 ft. dog-eared fence picket
  • coral, yellow, silver and black acrylic paint
  • natural raffia
  • one artificial sunflower
  • black heavy-gauge craft wire
  • Tracing paper
  • transfer paper
  • stylus
  • ruler
  • paintbrushes
  • black permanent marker
  • hammer
  • two small nails
  • wire cutters
  • a hot glue gun
  1. Step 1

    Allow paint to dry after applying each color.

  2. Step 2

    For pencil lead, draw a line 1 1/2" from pointed end of fence post. Paint lead of pencil black.

  3. Step 3

    For pencil eraser, draw a line around fence picket 3 1/2" from square end. Draw another line 5 1/2" from eraser line to make eraser shaft. Paint eraser coral; paint eraser shaft silver.

  4. Step 4

    Draw a jagged line 4" from pointed end of fence post. Paint pencil yellow from jagged line to eraser.

  5. Step 5

    Spacing 1/2" apart, use marker to draw three lines on each end of eraser shaft and to write message on pencil.

  6. Step 6

    Cut several 45" lengths of raffia; tie into a bow around eraser shaft of pencil. Glue sunflower to knot of bow.

  7. Step 7

    For hanger, cut a 5" length of craft wire. Leaving 1/4" of nails showing, hammer nails into back of pencil 2" from eraser end and 4" apart. Twist one end of hanger wire around each nail.

  8. Step 8

    For decorative wire, cut a 24" length of craft wire. Bend three 1" dia.loops along wire; wrap ends of wire around nails to secure.
