Learn how to make great southern style beef stew. This stew has a great flavor. It is a great meal for the cold winter months.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large pot or pressure cooker
  • 5 medium to large potatoes.
  • Stew meat 1 lb or so, depending on how much you prefer
  • 1 can of basil, garlic and oregano diced tomatoes.
  • Other vegetables you may like to have in the stew.
  • Large Pot
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 tbsp of butter or veg oil
  1. Step 1

First, add 1 tbsp of oil or butter in a large pot. Put the stew meat in and let it brown on medium to medium high heat. Make sure when browning the meat, you stir it around and make sure there is actually brown on the meat and not that it is just cooked to the color of brown. The bottom of the pan will get pretty brown, but do not let that get burnt. Reduce heat if you think the brown in the pan is going to burn. Next, after the meat is browned really good, you are going to pour in about 20 oz of water and a can of diced tomatoes. Add the other vegetables you would like to have in your stew according to how long it will take them to cook. You can cook them in advance if you would like and add them at the end.

  2. Step 2

After adding the water and tomatoes to the stew meat, let it cook on low heat until the stew meat has turned soft enough to eat. This will probably be about 6-7 hours. Do not over cook the meat because you will still need to cook the potatoes until they are done. Peel and cut the potatoes when the meat is ready. Place the potatoes in the pot and pour in only enough water to cover the potatoes so they can cook. Let the potatoes cook on medium heat until soft and the stew is finished.

  3. Step 3

Do not forget to add your other vegetables to the stew either at the end or during the cooking process.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use a pressure cooker for this recipe also. Brown the meat, add the water, salt, pepper and tomatoes and cook until the meat is soft, add the potatoes and more water to cover the potatoes. Let them cook without pressure until the potatoes are finished.
  • This stew is not really thick, it will be kind of watery. You can thicken it with a little brown gravy mix in the end if you would like.
