Step 1
Talk with your mother in law. Make eye contact when you do so. By talking openly, you are actually expressing how you feel. Chances are, there are repeated patterns in your mother in law's behavior that you find annoying. These repeated patterns don't automatically go away. Although you cannot change your mother in law's behavior, sometimes it may be healthy to explain why you find your mother in law's behavior annoying.

Step 2
The geographical proximity is a common factor of mother in laws interfering in marriages, although in many cases, the distance is never too far. For some, moving to a different location may be something to consider. If a mother-in-law is constantly calling and visiting your husband and you find this interfering, talk to your husband about it. Talk to your spouse and discuss how the constant phone calls and pop can be lessened.

Step 3
Holiday time can be a sensitive time with mother in laws. Avoid topics at the dinner table that can be sensitive. Avoid bringing up previous events that could trigger arguments.

Step 4
Talk to a relationship expert who can offer some guidance on how to get along with a difficult mother-in-law. In some cases you may have to temporarily sever ties with your mother in law in order to be able to move forward with your marriage, while in other cases, you may have to be flexible with some of your attitudes in order to make the relationship work.
