Teach Dog to Not Jump on People

Consistency is important with dog training. Even though you may not mind your dog jumping on you, it is important to teach a dog good manners for the sake of visiters or children.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

It is easier to teach proper manners from the beginning than it is to change negative behaviors later. Anytime a dog or puppy jumps up on you it is important to knock him down followed by praise. Be sure noone ever encourages the dog to jump up because this will send mixed messages & confuse the dog.

  2. Step 2

When a dog attempts to jump on you, tell the dog "OFF" and block the dog's attempt at jumping with a knee to the chest. For a small dog use your foot or shin. I'm not saying to kick or hurt the dog, simply block his attempts with your body. You may also grab his paws and push him off balance if it's a big dog. A stop hand signal in the dogs face is also nice to add to the training process. Once he is down and calm, praise generously.

  3. Step 3

Consistency will pay off with less chance of someone getting scratched, knocked over, or clothing soiled by dirty paws. Your visiters will be impressed and glad that you have a well mannered pet.
