P2p content is not inherently illegal and therefore you have much to gain by using p2p networks, so long as you avoid the temptation to download copyrighted content.

This article will provide the instructions of how to download content from p2p networks from downloading and installing the software (for Linux and Windows machines) to searching for, and downloading, legal content.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer with a high-speed Internet connection
  • Administrator (Windows) or su/sudo (Linux) password.
  1. Step 1

First, if you are using a Windows machine, you need to download utorrent from here: http://www.utorrent.com/. If using Linux, you need ktorrent, downloadable here: http://ktorrent.org.

  2. Step 2

For Windows users, simply download the .exe file and double click, agree to terms of service. For Linux users, download the tar.gz file and type:

    tar -xvjf ktorrent-3.X.Y.tar.bz2
    cd ktorrent-3.X.Y
    mkdir build
    cd build
    cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix`..
    make
    sudo make install

  3. Step 3

A note for Linux users, you might also try opening a terminal and typing

    Fedora based distros:

    su
    password: [type password]
    gurpmi ktorrent

    Ubuntu:

    sudo apt-get ktorrent

  4. Step 4

Open up utorrent by finding it in your Program Files folder. For Linux, type into a terminal "ktorrent".

  5. Step 5

Once you have your torrent client running, it is time to look for torrents. Open your browser and go to google to search for torrents. Type keywords, e.g. "original rap bittorrent", download the torrent, then drag and drop to either utorrent or ktorrent.

  6. Step 6

When the download finishes, you then simply go to the folder where the original file was saved and click on it opening it with the appropriate programme.

Tips & Warnings
  • The torrent is not the file; it is the link to the file.
  • To find original content, make sure to use the word "original" in your search.
  • Please do not download copyrighted content; it ultimately hurts the artists.
  • If you accidentally download copyrighted material, delete it immediately from your hard drive.
  • Do not under any circumstances download xxx as torrents as you will at best get viruses on your computer and at worst get illegal pictures.
