Things You'll Need:

  • Proper attire
  • Resume
  • Be Prompt
  1. Step 1

I am going to list for you some of the things that are relevant to your success in today's job market. These are not earth shattering ideas, but proven things that have been successful on many occasion. During my 38 years and 3 career changes this has been true for me.

  2. Step 2

1.Being The Best Choice. There is always the possibility of many people interviewing for the same job or few jobs that are available. This is where you will need to be able to sell yourself to your potential employer. You know what you have accomplished in the past. Use that knowledge to seel yourself in the future. Companies are looking for the best available to join their teams. Team players are a major part of successful organizations. It is your job to show them you are the one they need.

  3. Step 3

2.Experience over education. Education is very important in today's market. However, education and knowledge are to me two totally different things. Knowledge to me is what you learn through experience. Knowledge helps you to have the advantage of being able to not make the same mistakes again. Being 50+ can be a great advantage to you when you are looking to start that new career. Life is the best educator available. Many times employers look to experience as the determining factor in the many fields of employment. This experience can be demonstrated by your work ethic. A good and positive work ethic can be the catalyst that puts you on top. While in some cases you will need the formal education to do the job required, that is not always the case. Many times the employer will hire you with the understanding that they will provide the necessary education needed for that specific job. Another way to land that job is to apply to the jobs that you know you are capable of doing. In doing this you won't second guess your qualifications.

  4. Step 4

    3. Looking Your Best. Times have changed in the way people present themselves in the workplace today. Back in the 70's & 80's more people dresses in a businesslike manner. However you don't necessarily need to that way. But you must look the good when you interview. How you represent yourself to your interviewer will go a long way in getting the job you want. Be sharp and dress sharp in your appearance. First impressions still carry a lot of weight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sell yourself before you interview
  • Be self assured not arrogant
  • Look the part
  • Never show up late
  • Never slough in the chairs
  • Always turn your cell phone off
  • Never chew gum or eat in front of the interviewer

on 2/20/2009 I've looked at the job market in what I consider to be my area of expertise. It's hard that I don't have a college degree. I feel like I have more experience than some others out there, and that I'm capable, but is that enough? You're right. It does sometimes come down to how well you "sell yourself" Good article:)
