The cold chills of winter are here, and so are those cold rooms and high energy bills. With a few simple solutions, you can obtain a warm house and a lower electricity bill in just a few steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First thing, check windows for drafts. To make sure no air is getting in around windows, cover outside of windows with clear plastic, or caulk around frames.

  2. Step 2

Now if you have doors leading outside that you do not use much, use an old towel or cloth to put behind the door in the floor to block any air from coming in. You can also do this every night before bed to each door.

  3. Step 3

Make sure that if you have a fireplace, that the flue is closed when not in use. Using a fireplace with the fan, can produce enough heat to help heat the house as well.

  4. Step 4

If you have ceiling fans, check to see if there is a reverse switch. Turning on ceiling fans in reverse during winter can circulate the air in the house and keep in warmer which will in turn use less energy than a heat pump.
