You can negotiate a higher salary even in these tough economic times. The cost of training and assimilating a new employee is usually much higher than retaining a current one.

  1. Step 1

    Make sure to research and find out what your skills are worth. In any negotiation facts and figures are crucial. A well presented case always has a much higer rate of success.

  2. Step 2

    Look on job sites such as monster.com and careerbuilders.com as well as networking with friends and colleagues in order to find a salary range for your skills.

  3. Step 3

    Always present yourself as confident and in demand. Your employer will respect you more if he/she thinks you are professionally sought after.

  4. Step 4

    Consider negotiating on the other perks included in your total salary package, such as bonuses and annual leave. Keep in mind that a partial work at home schedule saves commuting costs as well as wear and tear upon both you and your transportation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Go in prepared with a bottom line figure.
  • Ask for more than you're willing to accept.
  • Let your employer do most of the talking.
  • Make sure you are prepared, if you don't make a good case you probably won't walk away with an increase.
