Start with French Bread

Garlic bread is so easy and fast! A loaf of French bread is perfect for this recipe but a wider Italian bread works, too. Even stale hard rolls make incredible garlic bread. Use sliced bread, if you're desperate to have garlic bread with the meal. Use your broiler to make this fast while making the bread nice and crusty on the outside. Why pay so much for pre-buttered and herbed bread in the store?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Room temperature butter - amount varies
  • Garlic and Onion powder
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Italian spices
  • Parsley
  • Parmesan Or Mozzarella cheese - optional
  • Salt - optional
  • Cookie sheet
  1. Step 1

Split the loaf in half down the long way and place side by side on a cookie sheet.

  2. Step 2

Spread the butter on the bread from one end to the other on each half. Be generous - the butter is the base of your garlic bread.

Sprinkle each of the spices as lightly or heavily as you wish. The salt is optional and the two spice powders - garlic and onion - give you complete control about how much salt you are adding. I've actually thrown out all the garlic salt I had.

  4. Step 4

Turn your broiler on high in the oven. If you have a toaster oven, use a pan that will fit and cut the bread to fit the pan. Put the bread under the broiler and keep an eye on it. This takes only about two or three minutes and can burn quickly. If one side is not browning, turn the cookie sheet and position to brown the bread evenly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Position the rack in your oven as close to the broiler as possible but leave at least two inches between the bread's top and the broiler element.
  • If you make your own french bread, make an extra loaf and freeze it until you want to make garlic bread. The link to my french bread recipe is below and easy to make!
  • If you need to reposition the bread by lifting or tilting closer to the broiler, wear oven mitts and be careful.
  • Keep watching as this bread browns - it can suddenly burn!
