Keeping houseplants through dry, cold winter conditions can be tough. Incorporate these simple steps into your regular houseplant maintenance routine, and keeping them happy will be a snap!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Houseplants (duh)
  • Spray bottle
  • Pebble trays
  • Fertilizer
  • Patience
  • Intuition
  • A good houseplant guide book.
  1. Step 1

Our homes can be extremely dry during winter months, and this is a number one challenge for houseplants this time of year.

Lightly mist plants with your spray bottle. Do this in the morning so they can breathe in that moisture throughout the day.

  2. Step 2

Some plants need more moisture than others. Set these plants on a tray with pebbles and pour a bit of water in the tray. The stones will hold the moisture, and your plants will soak up the moisture from the roots up.

  3. Step 3

Another challenge in the winter is getting enough light to your plants. Pay attention to how the sun moves in your home. Move your light-loving plants around to capture the most sun. Put these plants in eastern windows in the morning, and move them to western windows at night. You may also want to look into grow lights for extra light if your natural light is severely lacking during the winter.

  4. Step 4

Use a good fertilizer for your houseplants during the winter. Miracle Grow liquid fertilizer is a great product. Read the manufacturer's instructions for use.

  5. Step 5

Not all houseplants are created equal. Some require special conditions. Get a good housplant guide to find out what each plants need for optimal growth conditions. The House Plant Expert (Paperback)
by D.G. Hessayon is a great guide to start.

  6. Step 6

Be patient, and use your intuition with your plants. Remember, houseplants depend on you 100% for their care. Listen to them, observe them, and pay them the special attention they deserve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a houseplant journal to keep track of the techniques you've employed that work (and the ones that don't work).
  • Some houseplants, like trees, are naturally deciduous. If a plant has dropped all its leaves, and looks dead - don't be too hasty in throwing it away. Consult your local nursery if you're not sure if your plant is dead or not.
