  1. Step 1

Whether you're looking for dachshund puppies, miniature poodles or a labrador retriever, it's paramount that you are able to tell the difference between a good, responsible breeder and a backyard breeder. Check and see if the breeder is registered with the AKC or other agencies and if they have had any prior complaints. Do they abide by the Breeder's Club Code of Ethics?

  2. Step 2

Ask questions. Find out how long they have been breeding puppies for. Find out how many puppies the mother has had, and in how long of a time period. Backyard breeders have a tendency to breed a dog to the point that it jeopardizes their health. Pay attention to the questions that the breeder asks you. Do they appear to screen you and educate you about the breed? What type of support and guarantee does the sale of the puppy come with?

  3. Step 3

Is the breeder knowledgeable about the breed? Have they checked their breeding line for congenital defects? Have they committed to ensuring that their breeding line is free from genetic problems, diseases and illnesses?

  4. Step 4

Evaluate how well they care for the dogs, both puppies and adults. Do they ensure that they are all exposed to human interaction, love and companionship? Do they provide adequate protection and shelter? Regular vet care? Immunizations? It is VERY challenging to be able to walk away from a cute puppy, especially one that you might feel sorry for but know that if everyone walks away from unhealthy situations, it will help keep the bad breeders out of business.
