This is how to find free books and cheap books online.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check book swapping web sites where you can find homes for the books you longer want and get ones you do want in return. This is a great way to find free books. While the majority of these are paperback book swaps, there are also some that offer textbooks, CD's and DVD's to trade.

Doing a online search using terms such as "book swap", "book swapping" etc. should provide many results. If you are looking for particular types of books, such as text books, use that in your search.

  2. Step 2

Be aware that you usually pay the postage when mailing the books you are getting rid of but do not pay postage when books you request are sent to you. Many of these web sites offer printed postage so you may not even have to go to the post office. If the book you are sending is under 13 oz., you can just drop it in the mail.

  3. Step 3

Find out how the program you choose works. Often, once the book you are swapping is received by the other members you receive one credit. One credit = one book, meaning you could then request a book for yourself.

  4. Step 4

Consider using web sites such as BookCrossing.com, which has a unique method for finding new homes for books. Members actually leave their unwanted books in public places such as coffee shops, bus stations, etc. A label is placed inside each book telling the story of bookcrossings, and the owner then can announce on the website where and when the book was "released into the wild". Other bookcrossing members can hunt the free books down, or a random person may find the books and become the new owners. The finders can then go online and register the books as being found. When they are finished with the books they can continue the pass it on process.

  5. Step 5

If you're not into book swaps, consider shopping for cheap used books on online auction web sites or sites that specialize in used books.

If using an online auction site, search for the book title you are looking for or you could browse all of the book listings until you find one you like.

On used book web sites, generally if you see a used book at a price you like you can purchase it from the owner and it will be mailed to you.

For each of these types of web sites, be sure you understand all of the terms and conditions and take into consideration other costs such as shipping.

  6. Step 6

Look to see if your local newspapers have online classified ads, or check other web sites where people can list items for sale locally. Often you will find people selling books cheap or giving away free books.
