Students (and Parents): Want to fill that dorm room or college apartment for as little money as possible? Read on!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • paper
  • pen or pencil
  1. Step 1

Make a full list of everything you'll need from the most expensive items to the least expensive ones. Before you start shopping make sure EVERYTHING is on it!

  2. Step 2

Make sure your list includes everything that is required by the school for your room. For example, you may need special internet connection cords - also, you may ne required to provide some sort of area rug for the floor - and also, do not buy anthing you may NOY be permitted to have in the room (such as a microwave oven, for example).

  3. Step 3

Check with your roomate(s) well before you start shopping so everyone knows what they are responsible for-TV, radio, rug, etc.

  4. Step 4

Once ready to befin shopping, look for sales for the more expensive items, particularly the electronic items-TVs, computers, etc. -Also, once you find out the measurements of the rug if you are required to provide one, visit your local carpet store which may have something in that size for a greatly reduced price from what you would pay for at the school!

  5. Step 5

    Utilize discount and "dollar" stores for items such as: silverware, plates and glasses; school supplies such as paper, pencils, pens and notebooks; disposable cups and plates; napkins, toilet tissue and other paper goods; socks, underwear and "throwaway" clothing like T-shirts;
mirrors and hair items; and much more!

  6. Step 6

Here's a great idea and something that is often forgotten: you will need a flashlight or two, a supply of batteries, extension cords, computer wires and basic tools such as a screwdriver and a hammer: All of these can be purchased in a discount/"dollar" store well before you move in!

  7. Step 7

And as far as a computer package, be sure to compare the ones at your local store to anything the college provides - I was very happy with one of my children's college which provided an on-site repair center if I purchased the package from the school-they even gave a "loaner" computer or printer for free while the original was being repaired!

  8. Step 8

See what you can get from other siblings who have already been to college or from friends! If your older brother's computer desk is still in good shape there's no reason to buy another one!

  9. Step 9

Finally, remember that there are things that you will forget or unexpected things you will need that will be made known to you after you get there-If you follow the steps above you will have saved enough money (and aggravation) where it will not cost you as much!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be organized from the beginning!
  • Get as early a jump as possible on getting what you need
  • Enjoy the college experience - it should be a great time in your life!
  • Pretest at home everything electrical before you bring it to the school, and do it as early as possible so you can replace anything if it doesn't work!
