Icy roads cause thousands of accidents every year. It is not safe to drive on ice, but if you find yourself in this situation, then this is how to control a sliding vehicle.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When you feel the car sliding, do not panic. It is important to stay calm so you can focus your attention on driving the vehicle.

  2. Step 2

Let off the accelerator. Grasp the wheel with both hands.

  3. Step 3

Turn the wheel into the direction the car is sliding. If the car is sliding to the right, turn the wheel to the right. This may feel unnatural but it is the correct thing to do. Make sure not to over-turn the wheel.

  4. Step 4

Do not stomp the brakes, this usually makes the slide worse.

  5. Step 5

If in a situation where you have over-turned, then turn the wheel back to the opposite direction.

  6. Step 6

If you are sliding and you have turned the wheel and the car takes an angle slide, keep the wheel turned a step on the brake momentarily. This will sometimes allow the car to straighten. Just be sure not to hold down the brake! I hope this helps. Drive safe.
