How to Make Kitchen Place Mats
Kitchen place mats serve as versatile dining table decoration and can be made from nearly any type of heavyweight fabric in any color or design. Fabric place mats also make after-meal cleaning easy, as they can be hand washed or thrown into a washing machine. Whether embellished or kept simple, decorative place mats are ideal for holiday meals, family dinners or special events.

1
Measure and mark four 18-by-14-inch rectangles on heavyweight canvas, along with four additional 18-by-14-inch rectangles in a contrasting heavyweight canvas color. Cut along the rectangle lines.
-
2
Line a primary-colored canvas rectangle with a contrasting-colored rectangle. The colored sides of each should be facing inward with the non-colored sides facing outward.
-
-
3
Thread the embroidery needle with a matching-colored double thread. Create a knot at the end of the double thread.
-
4
Insert the needle through the contrasting-colored canvas. Sew a stitch around the outside of the place mat, approximately 1/4-inch from the edge. Leave about 5 inches open on one edge of the place mat.
-
5
Turn the place mat right-side out so the colored sides are visible. Insert your hand into the 5-inch opening and push out the corners of the place mat with your finger.
-
6
Flatten the place mat against a hard surface and remove any pockets of air. Turn the flap at the edge of the 5-inch opening in toward the center of the place mat.
-
7
Finish sewing up the 1/4-inch opening to close the 5-inch gap made on one side of the place mat. Sew another straight stitch around the outside of the place mat, approximately 1/2-inch from the edges to create a double stitch.
