Students interested in applying for federally-funded financial assistance must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This can be quite a process, so follow these tips to save time filling out your FAFSA.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather the documents you are going to need to fill out your FAFSA:
    • Social Security Number
    • Driver's License
    • Income Tax Returns
    • Bank Statements
    • Investment Records

  2. Step 2

Print a copy of the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet. If you print out a copy of the FAFSA, you can take it with you as you ask parents or guidance counselors for information or help filling the FAFSA out. Then use this information to fill out your FAFSA online.

  3. Step 3

Determine how you are going to sign your FAFSA. You can mail in a page with your signature, or you can do an electronic signature. If you are going to opt for the electronic signature, you will have to apply for a PIN (Personal Identification Number).

  4. Step 4

If you opt for the electronic signature, save time and speed-up the process by applying for a PIN as soon as possible. Your parent can also sign with an electronic signature, so ask them what their preference is for signing your FAFSA.

  5. Step 5

Determine your eligibility. Eligibility for federal financial aid is dependent on several factors, so visit the FAFSA home page ahead of time to determine your eligibility status.

  6. Step 6

Save yourself time and trouble by making a note of the FAFSA deadlines. You may want to start filling out your application as soon as possible, and you can apply as early as January 1st each year. Check the FAFSA website for the application deadline. States and schools also have their own deadlines, so find out what those dates are ahead of time.
