Do you want a bulldog puppy?

Learn how to choose the perfect bulldog breeder and puppy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yourself
  • Money ($600-$4000)
  1. Step 1

Research Bulldogs- Be sure that a bulldog is the dog for you. Remember these are expensive dogs that require some special maintenance to keep them happy and healthy.

  2. Step 2

Ask for references- If you know of friends or family that have been happy with their bulldog, ask them which breeder they chose.

  3. Step 3

Beware of pet stores- Although some pet stores do offer quality dogs, the vast majority do not. Plus, their prices are often double or triple what a bulldog would cost from a quality breeder.

  4. Step 4

Research the breeder- Any quality breeder should be able to provide you with a pedigree for your puppy, information about the parents, allow you to see the parents and where the puppies are kept, medical records, and offer you a health guarantee. Also, if the breeder wants to interview you, that's a good sign that the breeder wants their puppies to go to good homes, not just the highest bidder.

  5. Step 5

Interview the Breeder- Ask questions of the breeder to be sure he or she really knows their stuff on bulldogs. You want a breeder that really knows a lot about bulldogs and their care.

  6. Step 6

Purchase your puppy at eight weeks of age- Many experts believe puppies under eight weeks of age are too young to leave their mothers and litter mates. In this time, puppies learn how to play and socialize properly. Some even think that puppies should not leave for their homes until 10 or 12 weeks of age.

  7. Step 7

Pick your puppy- There is no exact science to picking the right puppy. Look for one that's bright, active, alert, and wants to play some.

  8. Step 8

Take Your Puppy to the vet- Typically many health guarantees require that the puppy be taken to a veterinarian within 48 hours of purchase. Even if this is not required, it is definitely a good idea. Veterinarians can give your puppy a through exam to be sure he or she is healthy, start your new puppy on a wellness plan that includes vaccinations, and offer advice on proper training and care.
