The whole point of a garage sale is to sell your stuff and make money. Follow these pointers to the money.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on a date for the sale. Saturdays work best with mornings the best starting time. Check www.weather.com in order to pick a day with good weather.

  2. Step 2

Place an ad in your local newspaper. Most of them have a garage sale section. List your address, the date, the starting time (I suggest 6 am), and some of the things that you will have for sale. Furniture, electronics, and collectibles seem to bring the most buyers. Also list the sale as an estate sale if you want.

  3. Step 3

The week before the sale, go to your grocery store and get some boxes. Try to get the biggest boxes you can get. The whole idea is to use the box as a sign. Write GARAGE SALE, the date, and your address. If there is enough room, draw an arrow pointing in the right direction.

  4. Step 4

On Friday go out and set up the boxes in strategic locations around your neighborhood. Place them at busy intersections if possible. In caase of wind, place some rocks in each box.

  5. Step 5

On the day of the sale, set up some tables and place what you can on the tables. Try to group things by category, such as tools, clothes, movies, etc. Price tags are optional. Is a buyer sees something that catches their eyes, they will makle you an offer. They will start very low which means you should plan to "up" whatever they start with. Do not get ridiculous, but do not give the stuff away either.

  6. Step 6

Most of the buyers will show up early in the morning. As the morning goes on, the crowds will get lighter until by noon, most of the activity will be over. Remember this when negotiating with sellers. If you want to sell the stuff today, agree to low offers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some buyers will see your signs and show up on Friday night. Decide if you want to sell to them or not.
  • Quite a few of the early buyers will be pros. They buy at garage sales and then resell at flea markets. They will know their prices, so pay attention to their offers. Do not be afraid to raise them.
  • Do not put your stuff out early. It may get stolen.
  • Remove anything from your yard of value that is not for sale. Keep your garage closed. Many people have had things stolen out of their garage days or weeks after a garage sale.
  • Have cash on hand for change, and keep it out of sight.
