How to Dance a Basic Reggae Dancehall Move

From its roots in 1950s Kingston, Jamaica, to its height of popularity in the 1980s, dance hall was an influential force in music and fashion. It is a culture that encompasses music, fashion, dance, drugs, art and more. The music varies from slow-tempo songs played with acoustic instruments to beat-heavy dance songs created with digital instrumentation. Dance hall has its own dance moves, some of which are often described as sensual or sexual due to its emphasis on hip-grinding motion.

Play a reggae song with a slow beat. Dress in comfortable clothing and shoes. Stand in front of a mirror.

    • 2

Place your feet approximately 12 inches apart. Bend your knees slightly and relax your muscles. Place your hands on your hips.

Circle your hips in a figure eight motion.

    • 5

Stick one arm straight up over your head and bend your arm at the elbow. Make a circle with your elbow. Keep your other arm pointed down, bent at the elbow with your hand on your hips.
