Cut Down a Tree

If you've decided to take on the risky job of felling a tree, then here is a how to.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • chainsaw
  1. Step 1

The first thing you need to do in felling a tree is decide where you want the tree to fall. This isn't an exact science, especially if it's your first time, so make room for error. Do not underestimate the size of the tree. From the ground it doesn't look so tough, but it is much taller and much heavier, and can cause much more damage than you might believe.

  2. Step 2

Once you have decided where you want it to fall, mark the spot for bragging rights later. Spray paint an X on the ground so you can brag to your wife or your buddies that you had planned on it falling there.

  3. Step 3
First cut should look like this. Only cut about 1/3 of the way into the tree

The next step is to cut notch on the exact opposite side of the tree you want it to fall. Start by cutting a 45 degree angle from top to bottom about 2 feet above the bottom of the tree. Then make a cut straight across to that angle. If you are cutting to your left it should look like the picture.

  4. Step 4
Begin cutting just above the straight cut on the other side. Take caution, the tree will fall.

Now you go to the other side and begin cutting just above the straight cut on the other side. Refer to the picture.

  5. Step 5

After you begin cutting into the tree, it will start to crack...and eventually will fall. The most important thing is to get out of the way when it begins to fall. If the chainsaw gets stuck, your first reaction is to try and get it out. Don't! Leave it and get out of the way!

Tips & Warnings
  • The key to having the tree falling where you want it is to make sure you do not go to far in on the tree when you make your first cut.
  • Cutting down a tree is a dangerous job. This can be deadly to you or someone near the tree. Seek a professional, insured business if you are cutting down a tree in a residential area.

on 1/18/2009 Very interesting. I don't have any trees that need to be cut down, but I'll have to keep this in mind. Great writing too!
