Step 1
First, make sure you arrange your page without gluing or using adhesive so that you can move things around and rearrange everything until you're happy, THEN you can glue. Lay out your page elements and photos as well and move things around a few times until you're satisfied with the page layout.
-
Step 2
Second, use materials other than just complementary paper to frame your photos. Make sure the materials fit your page; use lace, tissue paper, or dried flower petals for wedding pages, some glue and real sand for beach vacation photos, and eyelets for just about anything. Other materials can include yarn, twine, ribbon, bits of wood (chopsticks, toothpicks), printed papers (crossword puzzles, newspaper), and wrapping paper.

Step 3
Third, you can also use words as borders, not just materials and elements. Fancy writing or block lettering above and below or in a full frame around the photo can also work. Try writing your words out on a separate sheet of paper and laying them around the photo so you can be sure it will look right before actually writing on the page.
-
Step 4
Remember that your photos don't need a border around all four sides. This can make the picture look busy or the entire page look crowded. Try a border along any one or two sides; you can also use a thicker border along the bottom and a thinner border on the top.

Step 5
And photos don't need to be in the middle of the page and you certainly don't need to use just one! Check out scrapbook examples of how small pictures up one side or two complementary photos on either side of the page really stand out.
