The first thing one wants on a cold day is away to get warm fast. Start with a tea kettle about full of water and set it to reach boiling. Then keep hot for use during the day. You can use a microwave but you loose the continued heat source. Place some powdered ginger 1-2 teaspoons, or a fresh cut piece into a small sauce pan about 2 -3 cups of water from the tea kettle and bring to a boil again. Let the ginger settle, add some sugar and pour into a cup that is heavy enough that you can hold the cup with bare hands when hot, but not totally insulated. Carry this cup around with hot liquid as you move about the house.
Ginger will expand the capillary vessels allowing more blood flow and give the body a warming to the skin surface. Ginger is also good for cramping.

Keep the tea kettle hot all the time and full of water. This is adding a small radiating heater to the space it is inhabiting. Kitchen, or other area maybe on a wood stove etc. Use the large stock pot to cook a batch of pinto beans or other food that will take a long time to cook. This is also a heater, but using a small amount of cooking fuel. Especially if done on a wood stove. Add the salt and other meats or seasonings to taste.

Look for the place that you sit the most often for activities. Place some baby blankets there to toss over your feet. Change the light bulb to a large wattage. Forget about conserving, It's COLD! Turn on a chanderlier over the table and let it run all day. The little bulbs will warm you while eating and also warm the room continously. With winter cold and darkness the light is mood lifting too. I sit under mine when beading on a cold day. At the end of the day run the vacuum cleaner in each room to move the heat around to areas that the air at floor level might be colder. There is always heat from the motor of the vacuum adding warmth to the room. I will do this twice in a day if it is too cold in a room located far from the heat source.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember if you are using an oven or burner for heat that it is burning oxygen in the room, so be sure not to use these without constantly monitoring. That is why extra cooking is a good thing, gets the food ready and adds warmth that is supervised.

  • Light bulbs are a good source of heat in a small room too, such as bathroom. Maybe add an extra lamp there for the coldest days.

  • Keep a close eye on all your heating techniques, if anyone is getting unusually sleepy check for carbon monoxide possibilities. All gas heaters need to be vented. That is why the oven shouldn't be used over a long period.

I follow the sun around from room-to-room as the day progresses. Sitting with the sun falling across you just feels warmer immediately.

My feet get cold at the end of October and stay cold until the end of March. It has something to do with the lack of humidity in the air. I run a humidifier all day through the winter. Hunter has a really good one. Good ideas. Jeanie in Pa. at 28 degrees
