Step 1
Find out the lineage of the dog. A Labradoodle is a mixed breed: a cross between a poodle and a Labrador retriever. The Portuguese water dog is a purebred.
-
Step 2
Weigh the dog. A standard size Labradoodle can weigh up to 80 pounds. A Portuguese water dog can weigh up to 60 pounds.
-
Step 3
Look at their coats. Both have non-shedding coats. The Labradoodle's coat can be either curly or fleecy. The Portuguese water dog has either a wavy or curly coat.
-
Step 4
Check the dog's color. The colors can be similar. The Labradoodles can be black, apricot, red, chocolate, silver, or cream. The Portuguese water dog can be black (entirely or silver tipped), black and white, or brown. Portuguese water dogs may also have white legs or chests.

on 10/25/2009 I adopted a "Labradoodle", at least that's what I was told that he was, from the local shelter. He was a stray. After watching an Animal Planet show featuring the Portuguese Water Dog, I'm not so sure that my boy is a "Labradoodle". There is no available history. He was thin when I got him and at 55 lbs., I put him on a diet. When I first examined him, I thought that someone had attempted to dock his tail since it seemed unusually thin after the first 6in. His canines are as large as my female Great Pyrenees/Malamute's. The incisors have a scissor lock. Is there a way to do a side by side anatomical comparison?

on 1/19/2009 Good tips to tell the difference between the Labradoodle and Portuguese Water Dog. I loved my PWD and still miss her after 6 years!
