How to Install a Garage Door Insulation Kit
Metal garage doors without insulation transmit heat and cold into the garage and home. The large metal surfaces of the door act as a radiator, exposing your garage to the outdoor climate. This radiant effect can make the garage uncomfortable on hot or cold days and can increase your home energy bill. Installing a garage door insulation kit is easy; you can do in about an hour. If you don't want to use a kit, polystyrene foam panels are available at most home improvement stores and will work just as well. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the size of the individual garage-door panels. Measure the height of each panel to the inside of the metal rails that frame the panels. Measure the width of the panels to the outside of the metal frame rails so the panel will fit between the rails.
-
2
Lay out the polystyrene sheets on a surface suitable for cutting on. Transfer the measurements to the polystyrene sheets with a marker.
-
-
3
Use a straightedge and utility knife to cut the panels to the correct size. Cut small strips out of any leftover polystyrene to fill in the sides of the frame channels.
-
4
Place the strips in the sides of the frame channels.
-
5
Place the top edge of the polystyrene panels in the top of the frame rail for that section of garage door. Bend the middle of the panel out slightly and push the bottom of the panel into the lower frame rail.
-
6
Release the panel. It should straighten out and lock into the frame rails.

Tips & Warnings
You can make shallow cuts lengthwise along the back of the panels to make them easier to bend.
Always cut away from your body and hands when using a utility knife.
