Sew a Button On a Shirt
Sew a Button On a Shirt

Sewing a button on a shirt sounds pretty easy but, there is a trick to it. You don't want it to be sewn too tight but you also don't want it to be too loose! Check out this easy and simple trick!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a shirt that is missing a button
  • the button
  • thread
  • needle
  • a toothpick
  1. Step 1

Take your needle and thread it with your thread. I always quadrouple the thread so it is stronger. You do this by taking a long piece of thread and folding it in half lengthwise. Then, take the folded end and thread it through the needle head. This way you have two pieces of thread coming out of either side of the needle head. Make sure your thread is long enough! You can always make it extra long and cut off the excess later.

  2. Step 2

Tie all the ends off with one big knot. You may have to do a couple knots so that it is big enough that it won't simply slip through the fabric of your shirt.

  3. Step 3

Place your button on the shirt in the appropriat spot.

  4. Step 4

Slip the toothpick between the shirt and the button. This will ensure that the button doesn't get sewn on too tightly and make it hard to fasten later.

  5. Step 5

Poke the needle and thread through the fabric and one of the button holes. Then poke it back through the other hole. Repeat four or five times until you feel the bitton is securely fastened to the fabric.

  6. Step 6

Now, to finish it off, make sure the needle and thread are on the underside of the garment. Poke the needle only through the thread that you've already sewn, not to poke through to the other side of the garment. You are just looping it back and forth on the underside of the shirt as a means to tie off the loose end of threads. Once you've done that a couple times, tie a knot as close to the garment as possible. Then cut the strings!

  7. Step 7

Remove the toothpick. Now you have a securely fastened button that is not too tight to the shirt.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can put a dab of clear nailpolish or super glue to the center of the button to make sure the thread does not come loose in the future. Do this to all your buttons so you never have to worry about one popping off!
