How to Replace Door Locks

Exterior door locks should be replaced if your keys have been lost or stolen.

Whether you have recently moved into your new home or you are updating your decor, replacing the door locks is a straightforward task. Replacement lock sets are sold in kits by a number of manufacturer's in a variety of styles and finishes. You will be able to find a lock set that fits your decor and budget. The kit you buy should include everything you need to accomplish the task including screws and replacement parts.

Things You'll Need

• Replacement lock set or door knobs
• Drill or screw driver with the appropriate bits
• Safety goggles
• Gloves

Instructions

1. Check the contents of the replacement lockset and match them to the contents list on the box.

2. Open the door.

3. Remove the screws from the inside door handle using a drill or screw driver. The outside knob has a keyhole. Wear your safety goggles and gloves if you are using an electric drill.

4. Hold the other side of the door handle while you are removing the screws so it doesn't fall out as the screws are loosened.

5. Pull both door handles off.

6. Remove the screws from the latch-plate on the front edge of the door.

7. Pull the latch-plate and latch assembly out of the door.

8. Choose the latch-plate from the kit that matches the existing cut in your door.

9. Slide the correct latch-plate onto the lock assembly.

10. Turn the lock, with the plate on it, so the sharp edge faces the inside of the door. If the latch assembly is inserted incorrectly the door will not latch or lock.

11. Slide the outside door knob, the one with the keyhole, into the hole from the back of the door. The spindle from the door knob will slide through the hole of the latch assembly closest to the latch plate. When the knob is positioned correctly the latch plate will sit flush on the edge of the door.

12. Position the inside door knob on the inside of the door.

13. Screw the knob on while holding the two handles together. Do not over tighten the screws.

14. Screw the latch plate in place.

15. Remove the strike plate on the door jamb.

16. Screw the new strike plate into place with the edge facing into the room.

17. Test that the door closes, latches and locks properly.

Tips & Warnings

• Take an old interior lock set shopping with you to help find a match.

• Wear safety goggles and gloves when working with power tools.
