This little craft is so easy and inexpensive to make! They are great as Christmas presents, center pieces, and door prizes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One empty food can (13oz coffee can works best)
  • 3-4 boxes of individually wrapped candy canes - chose colors that express yourself!
  • Hot glue gun
  • glue sticks
  • spool of wire-edged ribbon
  • small plant or filler candy
  1. Step 1

Heat up the hot glue gun. Remove all wrapping from can, it should be empty, washed, and completely dried before starting. Lay out your glue sticks and candy canes, because after you start, you need to move fast!

  2. Step 2

Measure and cut just enough ribbon to cover the top rim of the can. The ribbon is going to be folded so that half the width is inside the can, and half the width shows outside the can. Lightly pipe glue along the inside of can at the top rim, patting down half the width of the ribbon as you go. Then fold the ribbon over so it completely covers the top rim of the can. Now you have a ribbon border to cover the metal edge of the can.

  3. Step 3

Pipe glue in a verticle line directly onto the coffee can. Immediately attach candy cane to can so that hook of the candy cane is at top of can, and curves away from can. Hold the candy cane in the glue until firmly set. Repeat until the entire can is covered in candy canes, do not allow any spaces between candy canes.

  4. Step 4

Wrap ribbon around candy caned can and tie ends in a big bow. Place a small dab of glue behind the heart of the bow to ensure secure placement. Let planter completely dry and set before filling with plant, candy, cookies, etc...

Tips & Warnings
  • Once the can is complete, it can be filled with a plant - such as a Christmas cactus, or a pointsettia. On a budget, it is also an adorable gift when filled with candy.
  • Be creative! With such a large color variety of candy canes and ribbon available, the possibilities are endless!
  • Other than the coffee can and the hot glue gun, all the supplies can be found at your local dollar store!
  • Take care holding the can while piping on hot glue, as the metal of the can will heat up.
  • Take care not to drip hot glue on yourself, your clothing, or your furniture.
  • Do not pull off and eat the candy canes! The hot glue melts through the wrapper and the candy is no longer edible!
