Your Career Objective makes your goals clear to whomever reads your resume.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • your resume
  1. Step 1

Think about what you want to achieve in your career. Advancement? Management opportunities? Travel?

  2. Step 2

On your resume, after your header and contact info, enter your career objective.

  3. Step 3

Keep it to one sentence, focusing on the positive goals you want to achieve. Try to avoid anything negative in your statement.

For example, if you are job-hunting currently to leave a position where you know you'd do a better job than your current boss, don't say "Looking for a career in management so I don't have to listen to anyone boss me around." It would be better to say "Looking for leadership opportunities and increased responsibility."

  4. Step 4

Read through your resume and make sure it is formatted well. Does your career objective line up with your experience? It should be a realistic step from where you are now on the career ladder.

Tips & Warnings
  • While some people leave a career objective off of their resumes completely, it is still an acceptable way to start your resume.
  • If applying for a particular job, make sure your career objectives line up with the opportunity available. For instance, if you don not want to travel, but the job requires travel 50% of the time, it may be a waste of time to apply for this particular opening.
