How to Furnish Your Apartment on a Small Budget

As you stand in your apartment, you start to get the feeling that something may be missing. Then you realize the problem. You have no furniture to furnish your apartment with. This is compounded by the problem that you have limited funds with which to furnish your apartment. There is no need to fear furnishing an apartment on a small budget. All it takes is a little know how, and soon your apartment will be a palace fit for a frugal king or queen.

  1. Step 1

    Tell everyone that you know, friends and family members that you are trying to furnish your apartment on a small budget. Ask them if they know of anyone who may have some spare furniture that they no longer need. Most people have a few pieces of furniture lying around their storage space that they can donate to you so that you can furnish you apartment. This is a great way to get furniture without spending any money.

  2. Step 2

    Head to you Salvation Army store on a regular basis to checkout their furniture selection. Salvation Army is a great resource to get furniture to furnish your apartment with. Many interior designers use these places to find unique pieces to decorate their clients’ houses. This is why you need to go often so that you will have the first shot at new pieces. You can either use your finds as is or you can refinish them to match the rest of the items that you will be using to furnish your apartment with.

  3. Step 3

    Drive around your town on Saturdays to checkout the yard sales. This is a great way to pick up gently used pieces of furniture to furnish your apartment. Make sure you have a way to go back and pick up the items once you make the purchase. Have a friend who will lend you their truck if you do not have one yourself. When using this method to furnish your apartment make sure that you negotiate the price of the furniture that you buy. This will help to save you money.

on 1/15/2009 Wonderful tips! When I was trying to furnish my apartment back in college I used to dumpster dive behind the dorms...rich freshman would toss perfectly good furniture all the time!
